The California Billfish Series is the largest offshore tournament series in California. The series consists of three striped marlin tournaments that attract the West Coast’s most avid fishing teams. The Zane Grey Invitational kicks off the series, running from September 9-11, while the Avalon Billfish Classic and the Catalina Classic run simultaneously from September 23-25. The format of each event is unique and attracts a wide cross section of offshore anglers. The events take place on Catalina Island, the birthplace of big-game angling and the perfect backdrop for the series. With its historical venue, great fishing, top-notch parties and banquets, and the biggest prize purse in California, the California Billfish Series stands out as the West Coast’s premiere offshore event.
Happy Ending Lures
Just about every marlin crew will pull jigs as they troll the grounds, looking for some tailers or sleepers. Well, thanks to our friends at Happy Ending Lures, every team participating in the California Billfish Series will receive a free custom fishing lure to add to the spread.
Owned by Mike Hulsey, Happy Ending Lures has steadily built up a growing clientele on the West Coast. These lures are built by hand to exacting standards. Mike and his crew fish Southern California and Mexico a ton and they know what works in the spread.
Every lure created by Happy Ending is hand poured with clear casting resin. They don’t use epoxy. The clear resin is then hand polished to give it a glowing finish. The lures come in a range of shapes, color combinations and weights, but it’s the inserts that really give them the flair that helps Happy Ending stand out from the rest of the fleet.
The lure makers use a custom process that puts multi-layered colors over mirror, colored abalone or mother of pearl inserts to give the lures a flash that marlin, tuna and all other pelgaics simply can’t ignore.
The many years of commercial, charter and sportfishing experience shows in each lure. Make sure to have a Happy Ending Lure in the spread come tournament time!

Custom Trophies Up for Grabs
The California Billfish Series, the largest offshore tournament series on the West Coast, has just announced that it will retain the services of Marine Art & Trophies, a custom trophy maker based in Central America.
“Last year we really wanted to step up the trophies that we give out in the Zane Grey, Catalina Classic and Avalon Billfish Classic,” said tournament director Ali Hussainy. “We decided to award the winners custom bronze sculptures as trophies and we were very pleased with the craftsmanship and finish of the trophies we got from Marine Art & Trophies.”
Marine Art & Trophies runs a large foundry in El Salvador, and has been making marlin sculptures for several years. The company had its artwork on display at the Miami International Boat Show and that’s were Hussainy first saw the sculptures.
“I was really blown away by the quality,” he says. “They offer several different finishes and custom bases that you can choose from. It’s great for us because the trophies we use in the three tournaments are all a little bit different.”
The trophies range in size with the first-place sculptures measuring 20 inches in height, with a design that incorporates three different marlin.
“The trophies were a big hit last year and we’re happy to have Marine Art & Trophies back on board for 2012,” Hussainy said.
The California Billfish Series is comprised of three events. The Zane Grey Invitational is the first tournament in the series. This year, the Zane Grey takes place from September 9 -11 out of Dana Point Harbor. The Catalina Classic and Avalon Billfish Classic are fished simultaneously. The event is held out of historic Catalina Island with the festivities running September 23 – 25. To learn more about the California Billfish Series, visit www.catalinaclassic.com.

Dates Set for 2012 California Billfish Series
There’s already $25,000 in the pot waiting for those teams who register for the 2012 California Billfish Series, the West Coast’s largest offshore tournament series. The California Billfish Series is made up of three individual events — the Zane Grey Invitation scheduled for September 9-11, and the Avalon Billfish Classic and the Catalina Classic, which will be held September 23-25 on Catalina Island.
Last year’s Zane Grey Invitational took place out of Dana Point, California to make the most of a hot bite just off the coast. There was a body of striped marlin here that the fleet found, and the crew on Shark’s Parlour managed to land the winning fish. The fleet had nothing but good things to say about holding the first leg of the California Billfish Series in this location, and the award’s banquet at the Wind and Sea Restaurant was a huge hit. With such a glowing recommendation, the tournament committee has decided to host the 2012 Zane Grey in Dana Point once again. Continue reading “Dates Set for 2012 California Billfish Series”
2011 California Billfish Series Wrap Up
While the 2011 California striped marlin season will go down as another tough one for the West Coast, the teams that participated in the California Billfish Series presented by Typhoon Polarized Optics made the most of it and still had plenty of fun. With three individual fishing tournaments, including the Zane Grey Invitational, Catalina Classic and Avalon Billfish Classic, the California Billfish Series attracts the top marlin crews in the western U.S. to compete for some big money.
The Zane Grey Invitational was the first tournament in the series, held September 11-13. Tournament director Ali Hussainy made the decision to move the tournament to Dana Point to take advantage of a body of striped marlin located right off the beach. It was a popular decision and the crew on Shark’s Parlour, a 47 Riviera, scored a big win, taking home a paycheck of $79,213 for the Day One and Day Two dailies as well as the overall jackpot.
The team on Shark’s Parlour, including Jim Sloan, Tom Sloan, Eric Hermann, Bryce Hermann, Rick Triguiero and Jesse Henry took the lead on Day One and held the position the entire event. The team hooked a marlin well south of Dana Point on a live bait at 10:55 a.m. on Day One. Jesse Henry landed the fish just 20 minutes later, and the team decided to release it and take the 100 points. Henry’s fish was the only one caught on the day.
